A PIECE OF RED STRING
|
I was sure it was there when I entered it was standing quite still on the floor. With a piece of red string to secure it - this I saw when I opened the door. When I looked for it there in the darkness I could hear the thing moving around. One minute up there on the ceiling the next it was down on the ground.
If push come to shove I'd confront it - I would stand up and act like a man. But I run to the door to escape it, and the knob came away in my hand. I was quite as a mouse is when frightened - just like fungi on petrified wood. Well I couldn't be sure it was friendly as it sidled to near where I stood.
My knees and my teeth played a rhythm, and the hairs on my neck stuck out straight. This all started at half past eleven, and lasted till quarter to eight. I could tell when it left, I could sense it, and was pleased to be rid of the thing. When I switch on the light to be certain, all I saw was a piece of red string.
