THE STORY OF PETER PAUL & MARY

The true story of Peter Paul and Mary as far as I can tell has never been told so is it any wonder there are many theories. I suppose the only way to explain my interest in this unusual threesome is to explain the reason I got involved, and why I was desperate to find out the whole story. It all began with my purchase of two unusual statuettes, of course they weren’t genuine just synthetic replicas, and a mere half of the size of their valuable originals. They were so cute I needed to find out more about them and who was responsible for making them. It appears the two main characters Paul and Mary were once devoted companions, and although only five years old they’d made a pack to one day get married, but of course you’ve heard such stories like this before. Their plans however were upset when in 1914 England was plunged into war with Germany, and Paul was sent to live with relatives who worked on a large estate in the country.

Mary and Paul kept in touch by sending letters to each other every week, but Mary’s letter was not the only correspondence Paul received on one fateful day in June. It seemed Paul had a rival called Ginger Wallace who also took a shine to Mary, but because she continually rejected his advances Ginger was determined if he couldn’t have Mary as a friend neither could Paul, and set about writing a letter explaining how Mary and him were enjoying doing everything the separated friends used to do. Now to a five year old boy who’d been dragged away from his natural environment and the first love of his life this was unbearable and he was very upset indeed. At first Paul wouldn’t tell his aunt and uncle what was troubling him, but gradually the problem came to the surface, and to compensate the young lad they bought him a dog who Paul named Peter.

Mary’s father had also noticed how sad Mary had become, and after finding the reason he telephoned Paul’s relatives and made an appointment to see them in order to correct the misunderstandings. Now at this point things get stranger than fiction because unbeknown to both Paul’s aunt and uncle, Mary’s father was the sculpture that was to eventually craft the statuettes, and even stranger both had taken photographs of the youngsters in their melancholy state, and these images were what he used to depict the sadness in the work.

Oh by the way Mary and Paul eventually got married in a little church not far from the village were Paul was sent during the war, and they had nine children who all became involved in children’s welfare. The dog named Peter? Well yes he also found a mate and had nine pups who all became blind dogs, and if you believe that you’ll believe anything, everyone knows Peter Paul & Mary were a pop group back in the good ol’ days, have a nice day.
