Peter Cleaver was a member of the National Dahlia Society for some forty years
and was elected to the Executive Council in 1976 until ill health caused his
retirement in 1999. He was elected a Vice President of the Society in 1997.
Peter was an Essex man who enjoyed growing, showing, judging and raising dahlias
in particularly Giant Decoratives.
During his showing career he won both the A.T.Barnes Trophy (in 1999) and Maurice Lord Trophy (1987 &1993) at the National Show. As a raiser Peter started with the Fairway Prefix, notably Fairway Pilot and Fairway Spur but his best raising , which will be with exhibitors for many years to come, is undoubtedly Sir Alf Ramsey ( 1999) . Sir Alf was in real life, manager of the English football team and a wonderful International soccer player and was a personal friend of Peter.
Peter was a football fanatic being for many years a Vice President of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and could call many players, managers and Sir Alf his friends Last season he travelled down from Suffolk for their Home matches despite having to watch the games from a wheelchair.
Peter worked for BT in north east London and lived for many years in nearby
Essex for many years before retiring to Suffolk.
A quiet man he made many friends in the Dahlia world up and down the country
with his welcoming smile and he will be sadly missed by his family and his many
Dahlia friends at National and local levels by his death on Saturday June 12th.
