THOSE WERE THE DAYS
(Sorry for the state of this news paper clipping, it’s probably forty years old)
Never mind the `Year of the Rose’ it’s the `Year of Hartlepool’ in national
competitions. Tom Foster swept the board at the autumn show, including `Best
Bloom in the Show’ and his friend, Harry Lawson, was amateur champion at the
National Chrysanthemum Society early flowering, show also winning the Crick
Perpetual Challenge Cup. Harry is helped by his wife Pat, but his job is now
getting in the way of his work on chrysanthemums. He has been promoted to a nine
to five, white collar job, in charge of a section of the ambulance service, and
will not have so many day light hours to spend on his plants as when he was
working shifts. He may have to cut down from 650 plants to 450. Even though this
promotion came in May this year, he was still able to finish off a fine set of
chrysanthemums, with Denis Boaler (purple) and Sam Oldham (red) as two of his
best large reflexed blooms.
