PLEASE HELP THE CHARITIES EACH REPRESENTS

All the dahlias are for sale in 2008 priced £1-50 each all money received except postage will be sent to the people involved so as it can be passed on to their chosen charities. After receiving cuttings they should be potted on into 4" pots and kept frost free until planted out during the middle of May, or later if you live in the North.

Looking after them couldn't be easier, just go to my Dahlia Culture page.

After much mulling over how I can still help charities, or should I say how dahlias could help charities despite having to cancel our annual Open Week-end I came up with a scheme that quite a few of you might think would never work, and I must say on reflection may be I'm as usual, biting off more than I can chew, but neither-the-less I'm going to have a go even if like the cutting trade I have to scrap it at a later date. The idea is to notify all nursing homes that providing they pay the postage I will send them a collection of dahlias completely free. Who said muggings? At the best of times the best run Nursing Home, and Care Home are a woeful places, I should know having had my father, my mother, and my sister-in-law in them over the years, but it wasn't until the event of my sister-in-law having to go in the Highfield Manor Care home that I realised just how much a few dahlias brightened the coming and going of the visitors, staff, and residents. Now you're going to think I'm off my trolley when I tell you of what triggered the idea. It was three thirty in the morning that I woke after having a strange dream. It involved a Dr. Gerry Caplin who was involve with the birth of my eldest daughters first child Dean. For some reason he was in a Cafe and talking to the proprietors and although I couldn't see him I knew it was him because of his distinctive voice. As he left, dressed in a silk suit I thought how much younger he was from how I'd known him, it was almost as if I was seeing him in his early years. I called out "Dr. Caplin?" and that's when I woke with this sudden urge to try and do more with dahlias. I'll keep you posted on how the scheme progresses, but of course I have to wait for the homes to contact me, perhaps I should place a new page on my web site mentioning Nursing home, and Care Homes?

After having a few days away, and reading what I'd written before I left I saw a flaw in my ambitious plan. Of course if I told all and sundry that here was a guy willing to supply Nursing Homes, and Care Homes with free dahlias I could be inundated with demands of this precious commodity we call dahlias. A little thought and I was back on track to brighten someone's life because if I said the first six establishments only would be supplied with fifteen well grown cuttings that would be enough for me to manage. Then should the scheme take off they could apply a little quicker next time if unlucky the first time. I would have to ensure they were well informed on how to look after them of course. Now all there is to do is let every body know.
